Jigsaw the main antagonist of the Saw franchise. He is portrayed by Tobin Bell.

Dead Body

He is different to most serial killers as he didn't kill his victims directly, but instead relied on various lethal traps in which he places his victims. In most cases, he forces the victim to go through excruciating pain or trauma in order to survive.

History[]

Early Life[]

John Kramer was a successful Civil Engineer, who ventured into property development, explaining his mechanical skills, and how he was aware of the various buildings that he would subsequently use as his lairs and game locations. He was also a devoted husband to Jill Tuck, who ran a recovery clinic for drug users, and they were expecting a child to be named Gideon Kramer. One night while closing down the clinic, Jill was robbed and assaulted by a drug addict and thief named Cecil Adams, causing her to miscarry. This incident changed John's outlook on life, as he began to realize that people can only change themselves. Afterwards, John became enraged and detached, which ultimately led to his divorce.

Health

Lawrence Gordon's medical report on John Kramer

After going to the doctor's officer for a checkup, John was informed by Dr. Lawrence Gordon that he had colon cancer and an inoperable brain tumor, and that he didn't have much time left to live. Shortly after being diagnosed, he visited Umbrella Health hoping to be treated through an experimetal drug program, but the company's executive, William Easton, denied him health coverage.

John's Rebirth[]

Utterly depressed, John attempted to commit suicide by driving off a clinic, but managed to survive the crash unintentionally. Clinging to his life, John discovered that only when he knew his death was impending did he really begin to value his life. As John observed other people wasting their lives, people underserving and unappreciative of the life being denied of him, John started his mission to make people appreciate their lives and realize how precious life truly is, one person at a time. His first test subject was Cecil Adams, the man responsible for his unborn son's death, Cecil survived the Knife Trap but tried to attacked John which led to him falling into a pile of barbed wires and dying.

Becoming Jigsaw[]

John spent the next months of his life observing and planning meticulously for his "subjects", painstakingly creating devices to test their desire to live, often through ironic means. For example, Paul Leahy, a man who had slashed his wrists for attention, was sentenced to crawl through a maze of razor wires in order to survive.

Placing his victims in death traps, each victim was left a chilling message explaining the "crime" they had committed to deserve their fate and how they could escape alive. Each was conveyed either by a distorted

voice via tape or through Billy the Puppet. They often involved quickly thinking, ethically difficult decisions, self-mutilation or in some cases putting a victim through psychological trauma that John would often be present to view, unknowing to the victim.

As the number of victims increased, authorities nicknamed him as "The Jigsaw Killer" or simply "Jigsaw" for John because of the Jigsaw Piece of Flesh that he would cut from an unsuccessful victim. The piece was not to be intended to be used as a signature but simply to represent the "piece" of the "human puzzle" that the victims were missing: the survival instinct. Though police intensity continued to increase as more and more bodies were found in incredible and brutal devices, Jigsaw carried out his mission undauted.

Apprentices[]

Early into the Jigsaw murders, John managed to gain Detective Lieutenant Mark Hoffman as an apprentice.

Game Over

Hoffman, seeking revenge for his sister's murder at the hands of Seth Baxter, placed Baxter in a self-created Pendulum Trap that proved to be inescapable. Hoffman ended up pinning the murder on Jigsaw, given the methods used, which earned the ire of John. Capturing and sedating the corrupt detective and restraining him in a chair, which was connected to a double-barrel shotgun, John told Hoffman that he was not amused by being given credit for the work that was not his. Using his knowledge against Hoffman, John blackmailed Hoffman into becoming his apprentice, showing him a better means to "rehabilitate" the subjects. The first Jigsaw trap set up by both John and Hoffman was the Razor Wire trap for Paul Leahy. Over time, Hoffman became a more willing apprentice, assisting John in capturing some of his test subjects as well as providing John with the crucial files of

information containing many of the details of lives, jobs and convictions of the cops and criminals targeted in the Jigsaw murders.

The first victim to survive one of Jigsaw's traps was Amanda Young who was placed in the Reverse Beartrap and was forced to kill her cellmate to obtain the key to escape it. One night she returned home following a police interrogation about her ordeal. John confronted her, seeing potential within her. Amanda agreed to become his second apprentice, seeing him as a savior and planned to continue his work after he finally succumbed to the cancer. John set about training Amanda to possess the beliefs and skills needed to carry out his legacy, struggling to help her cope with her emotional responses to the brutal nature of their work. The pair grew closer with Amanda being great importance to John and Amanda reciprocating these feelings.

Jigsaw's health continued to rapidly decline, gradually reducing his mobility as his body degenerated and withered, confining him to a makeshift hospital bed. He was forced to ensure that Amanda was prepared before his death, but he knew that she was already experiencing problems and not following the rules of Jigsaw's games. Amanda had became a full-out murderer, creating inescapable traps that offered no salvation to their victims. John couldn't allow Amanda to continue on his path when he died, so he prepared a test which would possibly prove if she's capable of carrying on his work. However Amanda's inclusion as an accomplice in the games had frustrated Hoffman and caused a strain in his relationship with John, so he set out to ensure Amanda failed her test by threatening to tell John that she was practically responsible for Gideon's death.

The Final Tests[]

As John lay on his deathbed, Amanda, at his order, captured Dr. Lynn Denlon, testing her with the ability to keep John alive until another victim, Jeff Denlon, could pass his tests. To ensure Lynn's help, John had Amanda place the Shotgun Collar on her neck that was linked to his heart rate. It would detonate if John died or if Lynn moved out of range. John struggled to cling to life and see his final test complete but his condition deteriorated rapidly, causing Amanda great distress.

Amanda's anxiety grew into hostility towards Lynn, jealous of the attention that Jigsaw was giving to her, intended or otherwise. Her condition worsened when John hallucinated about his ex-wife, Jill Tuck, and said he loves her which Amanda mistakened that for Lynn. As the tests continued, Amanda began to become

increasingly unstable, eventually refusing to release Lynn from her trap even when she was ordered to do so by John. John revealed his knowledge of her murders but begged her not to kill Lynn, saying that she was important to Amanda's own survival. Amanda admitted that she thought no one really changed from the near death experiences in Jigsaw's traps, which she used as her motive for the inescapable traps. John continued to plead with his remaining strength for Amanda to release Lynn because he didn't want anything to happen to Amanda, but she refused due to Hoffman's secret blackmail of her, shooting Lynn in the back just as Jeff appeared, having escaped his trap. Jeff then shot Amanda in the neck.

As Amanda lay dying on the floor, a saddened John explained to her how Jeff was Lynn's husband, and that everything that occurred was an elaborate ploy to test Amanda's ability to release victims who passed their tests. In the end, however, Amanda failed. Though she meant everything to John, she proved unworthy to continue his legacy as his successor.

As Lynn lay injured and Amanda had died from the gunshot wound, John spoke to Jeff and offered him one last test: Jeff could kill with tools present in a table in the room or he could forgive John for all the pain he caused. Jeff claimed to forgive John, but picked up a circular saw blade, slitting John's throat with it and ended his life. With the last of his strength, John took out and activated a tape recording he made, which explained to Jeff that if he had failed, which he had, he was doomed to lose everything. In the tape, John revealed that he had captured his daughter, Corbett, that he was only one who knew where she is, and that she had a limited supply of air. After the tape ended, John died from blood loss.

John Dies

John's death

Just moments after his death, FIB Agent Peter Strahm discovered the corpse of John in the room with Jeff and Lynn and Amanda's bodies, and John's body was taken to the coroner's office. During John's autopsy, Dr. Heffner found a wax-coated tape in John's stomach, which he swallowed after Lynn performed the brain surgery for him.  The tape had a message for Hoffman that John made, warning him that he would not walk away untested, and that his games are not over yet, and that the games have just begun.

Personality[]

At the majority of times, Jigsaw was extremely calm and seemed to really care about Jill Tuck along with his apprentices and even his victims. Jigsaw wanted to see his victims succeed in their goals to escape alive, and claims he despises murderers, stating that his actions aren't murder. Jigsaw gave his victims a chance, he even gave Cecil Adams (the man behind his son's murder) a chance for survival.

Jigsaw has extreme beliefs and really thinks his making a difference in the world surrounding him. To survive, Jigsaw believes his victims should show him how much they want to stay alive by escaping the trap and completing their given task.

Jigsaw also told Hoffman that their work can never be personal.

Powers and Abilities[]

Jigsaw is extremely intelligent, being a civil engineer he is capable of constructing working mechanical puppets such as Billy. Jigsaw is also capable of building escapable death traps, preparing them for their victims and getting them to work how exactly he wants them to. Jigsaw was also capable of not getting caught by the police.

Jigsaw also is almost perfect in his kidnappings, capable of capturing his victims alive at the right time and not get caught. He often does this by drugging the victim to knock them out while wearing a pig mask to conceal his identity. Jigsaw also seems to be capable of forcing his victims into playing his games correctly to survive without cheating. Jigsaw was also very wealthy.

Relationships[]

Billy, the mechanical ventriloquist puppet designed by John Kramer, was a recurring item throughout the Saw franchise. It was used to inform the victims of Jigsaw's deadly games about the rules and instructions they had to follow in order to survive and in the event of their survival, it would deliver a message of congratulations.

Typically Billy would appear via video, though occasionally a doll would appear physically in dramatic fashion, such as riding in on a tricycle or crashing through a window in a cage. Tobin Bell, John Kramer's actor and Billy's voice actor stated that John Kramer/Jigsaw and Billy are brothers after he braves the Saw horror maze after he meets Billy again, thus showing his love for him as a brother.

Jill Tuck[]

Jill Tuck is John's ex-wife and later accomplice. John loved Jill and was a devoted husband but divorced her after Gideon's death when extremely depressed. After John's death, John left a box for her, convincing her to do his final request. John then instructed Lawrence Gordon to take action if anything happens to Jill.

Gideon Kramer[]

Gideon Kramer was John's unborn son and John deeply cared for Gideon. After Gideon's death, this was one of the reasons why John became Jigsaw and was suicidal along with having colon cancer and an inoperable brain tumor.

Amanda Young[]

Amanda became John's second apprentice after she managed to survive her trap. After escaping the trap, John was impressed and told her that she is now grateful of life unlike most people. While John's apprentice, she became mentally ill but still loyal to Jigsaw. Amanda designed her own death traps for her victims but they were inescapable traps which John disapproved of. Even though John really cared for Amanda, he chose to test her if she wanted to become his successor. Though Amanda failed and died because Jeff shot her, John then became very tearful and saddened over her death.

Mark Hoffman[]

After Hoffman used a Jigsaw trap to be inescapable and used it to kill Seth Baxter, John blackmailed Hoffman into becoming his first and secret apprentice. After John and Amanda's death though, Hoffman became the Jigsaw successor and continued his legacy but did not care for his victims unlike John.

Lawrence Gordon[]

John captured Lawrence Gordon as a victim for being cold, uncaring and unfaithful to his wife. After Gordon escaped this trap and later becoming John's third apprentice, John believed he was his best apprentice out of him, Amanda and Hoffman. And entrusted him to look after Jill after his death and promised no more secrets will be kept from him.

William Easton[]

William Easton was John's insurer however William refused to give him insurance after John had colon cancer, William denied him health coverage in order to make more money himself, not caring if this will result in John's death. As part of his new plans, Jigsaw planned to capture him and force him through a number of tests to survive and escape. After John's death, Hoffman carried this out.

  • Mannequin Factory: This factory was used by Jigsaw where he store some Jigsaw contraptions, his pig mask and Billy the Puppet. He also captured Jeff Ridenhour in the factory and planned to use him for a experimental trap. Here, Jigsaw had a showdown with Detectives Steven Sing and David Tapp which resulted in Sing's death.
  • Wilson Steel: This was used by Jigsaw and Amanda for an unknown amount of time. It was the location that Jigsaw carried out Detective Eric Matthews' test. It was also raided by the SWAT Team along with Daniel Rigg.

Known Traps[]

  • The Bathroom: Victims are chained at the ankle to pipes at opposite ends of a dark bathroom. A dead man was in the bathroom who had a tape player in one hand and a gun in the other. Both victims have tapes in their pockets which give them their instructions on how to win. In this, Lawrence was forced to kill Adam before 6AM, if he failed his wife and daughter would be murdered and he would be left to rot. Hacksaws are also in the toilet and Jigsaw expected them to saw their own feet off to escape the chains. Adam is left to die and Lawrence escaped.

Bathroom

  • The Razor Wire Maze: A victim will awaken mostly naked in a fenced-in area within a basement. Between the victim and the door is a gauntlet of densely strung together razor wire which a tape informs the victim that they had to find out where the exit is. Hidden somewhere is a hole which is the exit to the maze. The exit door was set to close and lock up when the time expires. Paul Leahy was placed in this but bled to death from Razor Wire.
  • Razor Wire Maze

  • The Flammable Jelly: A victim would be stripped nude and be placed in a dark cellar with broken glass covering the floor. There will be a slow acting poison going through the victim's veins and the antidote is locked up in the safe, the combination to which was amongst thousands of numbers scrawled on the walls. The victim's body would be smeared in a flammable substance, and he only had a lit candle for light. Mark Wilson was the victim and burned to death by the candle.
  • RB Amanda

    Reverse Beartrap

    The Reverse Beartrap:
The victim would wake up strapped in a chair, in a dimly lit room, with a large metal device locked into the victim's mouth. The device which was named the "Reverse Beartrap" was hooked into the upper and lower jaw, when activated, when the timer's out which was 60 seconds, if failed, it would rip the victim's jaw open. To escape, the key must be used on the trap's back to take it off the victim's head. The victim was Amanda Young who had to kill her cell mate to get the key from his stomach.
  • Drill Chair: The victim was strapped in a chair where two drills would get closer to their head to drill in. A key was needed to free the victim. The victim was Jeff and Detective Sing shot the trap multiple times until it stopped.
  • Quadruple Shotgun Hallway: A security trap which was in a hallway. It were double-barreled shotguns suspended from a ceiling in a hallway, each connected by a tripwire strung across the floor. If the victim activated it, the shotguns would go off and blow the victim's head off. The victim was
    Shotgun Hallway

    Quadruple Shotgun Hallway

Detective Steven Sing who was killed in the trap while trying to chase down Jigsaw.
  • Zep's Test: Zep Hindle would monitor Adam Faulkner and Lawrence Gordon in the Bathroom trap, if Lawrence failed his test, then Zep would have to kill his wife and daughter in order for him to gain the antidote for the poison Jigsaw injected into him. After Gordon's failure, Zep attempted to kill his wife and daughter, but the two managed to escape. Making his way down to the location of the Bathroom, he attempted to kill Gordon but was killed by Adam.
  • Flytrap

    Flytrap

    The Flytrap:
A victim would have a harness attached to their chest only removable if the key is obtained in time. Attached to the harness was a contraption consisting of two masks opposite from each other angled down from the victim's head. The mask had nails protruding inwards from the interior. If not removed within the time limit, the mask will have it's nails through the victim's skull. The victim for this trap was Michael Marks. To remove this trap he had to retrieve the key but it was placed in his right eye which he had to cut out to obtain with a scapel. Though he failed, having the mask closed in on him and killed him.
  • The Electrified Staircase: A trap consisted of a staircase with a rigged step surrounded by a chain link cage. The rigged step would spring forward and break the shins of the victim if enough pressure was applied to the stair below. This would also cause the cage door to shut. The cage would then be charged with an electric current giving anyone in contact with it a lethal shock. The victim was a S.W.A.T. Team where two died while the rest survived.
  • The Nerve Gas House: Obi Tate, Xavier Chavez, Jonas Singer, Gus Colyard, Amanda Young, Addison Corday and Laura Hunter awoke in a house riddled with traps contained within for each victim. They were breathing a deadly nerve gas and had to find the antidotes located in their respective traps to survive. In three hours the door to the house would open; however, if they did not each find an antidote in two hours, they would die. Each trap contained a way to receive an antidote. A combination safe contained an antidote but the combination was hidden within different colored numbers written on the back of each victims neck in the order of how they would appear on a rainbow. Several weapons are discovered including a single edged blade and a bat with nails driven through it.
    • The Magnum Eyehole: A security trap to keep the victims in the room for the required length of time. The trap consisted of a locked door with a gun attached on the other side of the peephole, and a pulley and chain to the doorknob on the other side of the door. The barrel of the gun was aimed directly at the peephole. When activated, a bullet will be fired through the peephole and into whoever the eye was in the line of fire. Gus Colyard triggered it and was shot through the eye, killing him.
    • Nerve Gas House

      Nerve Gas House

      The Furnace:
The victim had to crawl inside to get two antidotes suspended by chains connected to the door of the furnace. If pulled down, the door of the furnace would shut, igniting it at the same time. The only way to escape was to twist a knob that would turn off the gas and stop the fire from growing. The victim was Obi Tate and he burned to death.
    • The Needle Pit: This trap involved a pit in the middle of a room with used syringes. A locked door in the room contained an antidote but was set on a four minute boobie timer; if the timer expired, the door would remain locked forever. The trap was intended for Xavier Chavez, but instead he threw Amanda down as he refused to enter. After Amanda found the key, she passed it to Xavier. However just when Xavier was about to open the door, he dropped the key, causing the door to lock.
    • The Razor Box: The trap involved a box suspended from the ceiling, inside was an antidote accessible by two holes under the box big enough for a person to fit their arms through. Once they did, however, the victim would realize the corners of the holes were fitted with blades that would push up if something was inserted. If the victim put pressure on the blades to take the hands out, the blades would dig into their arms. The harder they pulled, the deeper the blades would go. However, if the victim only studied the box further, there was a key on top of it which would open and allow safe access to the antidote. This trap was intended for Gus Colyard. But Addison Corday went in the trap and died from blood loss.
  • Eric's Test: Jigsaw tried to have a conversation with Eric Matthews so he could be able to have his son returned to him. Though Eric resorted to brutality; after beating Jigsaw to within an inch of his life, Jigsaw ended the game and took him to the house. Though Jigsaw locked him inside and supplied him with oxygen. The video feeds of the events that took place in the Nerve Gas House was a recording of a few hours before when the house test took place. If Eric kept his patience, Daniel Matthews would have released him only a few feet from where he was sitting.
  • Shotgun Collar

    Shotgun Collar

    The Shotgun Collar:
An collar equipped with five loaded shotgun shells which would detonate on the victim, blowing their head apart. Jigsaw had this placed on Dr. Lynn Denlon who had to keep Jigsaw alive long enough to see Jeff Denlon complete his tests. If Lynn fails to do so, the trap would be triggered. She succeeded but Amanda refused to release her and Jeff killed Jigsaw, causing Lynn to die by the trap.
  • Jeff's Tests: Jeff Denlon woke up in an empty shipping crate, which was elevated on a pair of forklift prongs, in an abandoned meat packaging plant. Upon escaping, he proceeded through the plant that contained the victims of the Freezer Room, Pig Vat and Rack traps. Each victim was either directly or indirectly involved in a car accident that resulted in the death of Jeff's son. Jeff was forced to forgive or not to forgive each victim.
    • Freezer Room (Face Your Fears): A walk-in freezer where the victim would be chained up by their arms and stripped naked while twelve hoses filled with freezing water would spray on the victim, freezing them to death. To save the victim, Jeff had to retrieve the key to free her and open the next door. The victim was Danica Scott, Jeff attempted to rescue her but failed and she was frozen to death.
    • Pig Vat (Time to Let Go): The victim would be shackled to the bottom of the silo by a metal brace holding their neck. Numerous rotting pig corpses would be dropped in with the saw blades and grounded up, leaving the large amount of thick brown liquid remains to pour down a chute into the silo containing the victim, filling it and eventually drowning them. To save the victim, Jeff had to find the key for the brace which was located inside a nearby incinerator, along with his son's possessions which he needed to get the key. The victim was Judge Halden and Jeff managed to save him.
    • Rack

      The Rack

      The Rack (Here's Your Chance):
The victim was strapped to a device resembling a crucifix, their head held in place by a rotating lock, while their arms and legs were held in place by spikes through the hands and feet. Each section will begin rotating around 180 degrees, one by one, taking the body parts along with it to break the victim's bones. To save the victim, Jeff had to retrieve the key but taking the key would trigger the shotgun to blow his arm off. The victim was Timothy Young, Jeff attempted to rescue him but he failed and Timothy's neck was broken.
    • Jeff's Final Test: After completing his tests, Jeff Denlon exited the abandoned plant and entered Jigsaw's lair. During the confrontation, Jigsaw gave Jeff the choice of taking his revenge and killing him with one of the tools on the tray or forgive him and spare his life. Unknowing to Jeff, if Jigsaw died his wife Lynn Denlon would die too. Though Jeff claims he forgives him, he chooses to kill Jigsaw with an electrical saw. Before finally dying, Jigsaw played the final tape which informed Jeff that he is responsible for the loss of his second child, Corbett, who was locked away in a safe with limited air supply.
  • Amanda's Test: After becoming Jigsaw's apprentice, Amanda soon became unstable and abandoned Jigsaw's rehabiliation methods, creating traps that were inescapable and would kill the victims no matter if they succeed or lose. After capturing Lynn and Jeff, Jigsaw started testing Amanda's patience, gradually adding to her stress as Lynn was forced to assist him while wearing one of Amanda's devices, the Shotgun Collar. After Jigsaw ordered Amanda to release Lynn, she refused. He asked again, telling her that Lynn's life rested in her hands. Instead, Amanda became hysterical, shooting Lynn just as Jeff entered. Jeff, equipped with a loaded gun, shot Amanda in the neck. Slowly dying from blood loss, Jigsaw informed Amanda of her test and he had given her the rules when she was talking to Lynn.
  • Knife Trap

    Knife Trap

    The Knife Chair:
The victim would be placed in a wooden chair with their forearms being restrained with blades jutting upwards into the forearms. A panel level with their face was connected to the arm restraints. To escape, the victim had to push their face towards kitchen knives to break the trap. The victim was Cecil Adams, he managed to escape but died when he tried to attack Jigsaw, who moved out the way for Cecil to drop into razor wire and die from blood loss.
  • Hoffman's Test: Before dying, Jigsaw made a tape for Mark Hoffman which stated Hoffman is the "last man standing" (since Jigsaw and Amanda are now dead), he would not walk away untested, that "the games have just begin".
  • William's Tests: William Easton was an executive within a health insurance company was responsible for turning down coverage claims which resulted in the death of both Jigsaw (partially) and Harold Abott, as well as one of the main reasons of John Kramer becoming Jigsaw. He was given an hour to complete his tests or the bombs strapped on his limb would detonate, killing him. With each test completed, he was given a key to release each bomb.
    • The Breathing Room: William and another victim had breathing masks on their faces, being forced to compete against each other for one to die. The victim who mostly breathes would have them be crushed by a vase. The other victim was his company's janitor, Hank. William survived and Hank died.
    • The Hanging Room: Two victims had to be hung by a barbed noose for one to die, the other to live. William had to choose between them. The victims were Allen, the company's file clerk, and Addy, the company's secretary. William choose to save Addy and let Allen die.
    • Tara Test

      Tara's Test

      The Steam Room:
The victim had 90 seconds to find a way out of the caged maze beneath William and acquire a key at the maze's end to remove the device strapped to the victim's body. Should the victim fail and the timer reached 0, the device would fire a metal pipe into their skull, killing them. The victim was Debbie, the company's attorney, she escaped but failed to remove the device and was killed when the pipe hit her skull.
    • The Carousel Room: The trap consists of six victims and William had the choice of saving two while allowing the rest to get shot and killed with a shotgun, though William had to place his hand inside a metal box and press a button, causing a metel rod to pierce his hand to prevent the selected victim from being killed. The victims were Aaron, Gena, Emily, Josh, Dave and Shelby, William's junior associates, and William only saved Gena and Emily.
    • Tara's Test: William finds two cages on the side of him, one of which contains his sister, Pamela Jenkins, while the other contains Tara and Brentt Abott, wife and son of the man William is responsible for a death of. Tara and Brentt had the choice to spare or kill William for his actions, killing him would result in hydrofluic acid being pumped into him. Tara tried to kill him but failed to do so, Brentt then killed him in anger causing hydrofluic acid to pump inside William's body, making his insides melt out.
  • Jill's Test: Jill Tuck receives a box and a videotape, from her late husband Jigsaw. Jill plays the video, Jigsaw wants Jill to carry out his last will which is to test Hoffman. The box contains a newly updated Reverse Beartrap, six envelopes (one to five for William's tests, and the sixth one was for Hoffman's test) and a videotape (for Dr. Lawrence Gordon). Jill places the Reverse Beartrap 2.0 on Hoffman and leaves him to die. Hoffman manages to escape though.

    Dr. Lawrence Gordon's Test:
After Hoffman kills Jill using the Reverse Beartrap, Hoffman tries to cover his tracks and disappear by setting fire to a gas tank in his lair, resulting in an explosion that demolishes it, along with Billy the Puppet. As Hoffman walks away, he is attacked by three men dressed in pighead masks. He is overpowered and drugged, knocking him out. It is revealed that Lawrence Gordon was one of them with Ryan and Brad assisting him. Gordon was instructed by Jigsaw to take action if anything happens to Jill. Gordon locks up Hoffman in the Bathroom, leaving him to die.
  • Tapp's Tests: A large asylum was the location of an ongoing game involving victims, puzzles and traps mean't to test Detective David Tapp. Tapp awakened and was wearing a Reverse Beartrap where he was forced to complete a puzzle in order to remove it. Tapp then had to go through the asylum if he hoped to escape, but he traversed the location, he found that they were other victims inside and the majority were attempting to kill him. Tapp discovered that the reason the victims are after him because Jigsaw, while treating his gunshot wound, surgically placed a key in his body and the key was the only way the other victims can free themselves from their own traps, some traps more obvious than others. Tapp's game is set because Tapp has an obsession with catching Jigsaw and Jigsaw wants to show him that his obsession are hurting others.
    • Detox Chair: A victim would be strapped to a chair with two needles injecting a red liquid into their wrists. Tapp was instructed to sit in the chair next to the victim and allow himself to be injected with a blue liquid. Each individual has a poison acting throughout their bodies and it was up to Tapp to ensure that the correct antidotes were mixed using the machine between them and also make sure neither victim flatlined. The victim was Amanda Young and Tapp succeeded in saving both of them.
    • Pendulum Trap (Game): This trap resembled the Pendulum Trap created by Mark Hoffman, with minor differences, one being that it was hung vertical to the victim's body instead of horizontally. In order to rescue the victim, Tapp had to connect rotating gears before a time limit
      Tapp's Tests

      Tapp's Tests

expired. If Tapp failed, the victim would be split up in the middle, causing their entrails to spill out. The victim was Jennings Foster and Tapp succeeded to save him.
    • Iron Maiden: A trap which looked like a large-scale, untriggered beartrap. The victim's legs were strapped to a platform in between two boards lined with buzzsaws. Tapp was required to move steel blocks within glass cubes to symbols in each box in order to free the victim. If Tapp was to fail the test and cross too many strike marks, the magnets holding the boards would have shortened out and boards would have snapped shut on them, mangling the victim's body. The victim was Melissa Sing and Tapp saved her life.
    • Backbreaker Trap: The rack was designed to bend the victim's arms backwards, snapping them, followed by their back. To escape, Tapp had to connect three circuits in three electrical boxes. The victim was Oswald McGullicuty and Tapp freed him.
    • The Furnace (Game): A large furnace which would continue to increase in temperature, until the victim was burned alive. To save the victim, Tapp had to rotate small, circular levels of pipes so that they would connect to each other on opposite sides in order to prevent the furnace from reaching it's maximum temperature and burning the victim. Obi Tate was the victim and he survived.
    • Impaler Trap: The victim would be strapped to a wall with large metal spikes that rested behind it. Tapp needed to play a matching game involving different symbols which would appear on different television screens to release the victim, but for every mistake Tapp made, a spike from behind the wall would pierce the victim's body. However, for every correct pair, a spike would retract. If Tapp failed and matched enough symbols incorrectly, the victim would have been skewered to death by the spikes. The victim was Jeff Ridenhour and Tapp freed him.
    • Tapp's Final

      Tapp's Final Test

      Tapp's Final Test:
Towards the end of his game, Tapp was presented with two doors with which to walk through, labeled Freedom and Truth. To be able to choose one of the doors at all, Tapp had to first run through a brutal gauntlet filled with traps and other hazzards in order to retrieve a key to the doors.
  • Campbell's Tests: A series of tests for Campbell Iman.
    • The Flytrap (Game): Same as the original Flytrap.
    • Glass Elevator: A large gap where the floor should be, with a balance spanning it. Located at the end of the hall, is a protected glass elevator. Campbell is told that another victim located above him is in a similar situation and can only survive if Campbell choose not to take the elevator at the end of the hallway and sacrifice himself by getting crushed in between the spiked walls closing in on him. Campbell's second choice is to reach the end of the hall and get into the elevator, choosing to save himself, and allowing the other victim to die. Only one can fit into the elevator. The victim is revealed to be Michael Tapp and if Campbell got into the glass elevator and saved himself, Michael will be crushed by the closing walls. Campbell then meets Jigsaw in person inside a door and Jigsaw tells him his son is outside the building. Campbell is enraged and attempts to assault Jigsaw but is impaled by a swinging scythe. If Michael gets into the elevator, he will face two doors; one allows him to escape Jigsaw's game and publish the story from the case files he collected, while the second door leads him to a Pighead outfit, implying that Michael can become Jigsaw's new accomplice. The choice made is not revealed.
  • Michael's Tests: Michael Tapp wakes up in a cage lined to a track filled with broken glass. Beside him is a man named Solomon in the same situation. On a television, Jigsaw tells him them to move the cages to the end of the tracks to open a door and escape, however only one of them may pass the door. The floor is also covered with broken glass, and they are both barefoot, so pushing the cage while walking will not be an easy task for them. Solomon manages to make it in the end and escape, leaving Michael behind, while Jigsaw gives Michael another test.
    • Revolver Trap: A victim would be strapped to a chair with a revolver perched on a stand and aimed at their mouth, as well as a large yellow and red wooden target placed behind their head. To free the victim, Michael must switch off a panel of lights, however, each button pressed brings

the gun closer to firing. If failed, the gun would go off and shoot the victim in the head. The victim was Henry Jacobs and he was saved but was murdered later by Pighead II.
    • Tank: A tank that is slowly filling up with water with the victim inside. Michael must drain the water and shut off the electricity by connecting numerous rotating pipes so that he can reach the victim and open the tank before the victim drowns. The victim is Sarah Blalok and she escaped but was later murdered by Joseph Poltzer.
    • Crushing Table: The victim would be tied to a metal table with vices by their limbs and head. Michael must complete a series of color puzzles to shut down the device and free the victim. Should Michael fail, the device will get to full power and crush their limbs and skulls with immense pressure and speed, killing them. The victim is Joseph Poltzer and he was freed but he was killed by Michael.
    • Elevator: An elevator shaft where the victim had their arms restrained and locked onto a metal board, which is secured by chains connected to either side of the shaft, while their legs are secured to a roof of a stationary elevator resting beneath them. Michael must balance groupings of numbers before the timer expires and the elevator falls, taking the victim's lower half with it and killing the victim. She survived but was later murdered by Henry Jacobs.
    • Burning Rack: A victim would be tied by their hands, feet and a torso to a sliding cart, connected to a railing a few feet above the ground, hanging above numerous pipes. The pipes below are all linked to a heater and alternate between spewing flames. Michael must move the victim's cart horizontally from room to room until the cart reaches the end of the series of rooms in order to set the victim free. Each room has three sets of pipes that alternate between spewing fire for a set period of time, and it is Michael's responsibility to make sure that the victim is not hanging above the pipes while they're active. Likewise, Michael must also be required to complete puzzles in each room while he is preventing the hot pipes beneath the victim from burning them alive. The victim is Solomon Bates and he is freed.
    • Campbell's Final Test (Path of Blood): If Campbell is chosen to be saved, which takes him to an confrontation with a Jigsaw in a doorway. Campbell is informed that his son is safe, but he is enraged and lunges at Jigsaw but is killed and impaled by a hidden swinging scythe.
    • Michael's Final Test

      Michael's Final Test

Michael's Final Test (Path of Flesh):
If Campbell is chosen to die, Michael will be led to two doors: one is to his freedom and he continues on to publish his stories using the case files he collected during his tests, while the other door will lead him to a Pighead outfit because Jigsaw wants him to serve justice to the world and became an apprentice. Michael's final choice is not revealed.
  • Scythe Trap: When a victim opens a door, a scythe will swing down and impale the victim if they don't push the right buttons fast enough.
  • Shotgun Door Trap: When a victim opens a door, the trap will blow up the victim's head if the victim doesn't push the right buttons fast enough.
  • Shotgun Vest: A vest which was used on Michael. If Michael enters a specific location the vest will be activated by a sensor causing Michael's death by shooting his body multiple times.
  • Shotgun Vest

    Shotgun Vest

    Acid Cube Trap:
A cube will be placed on the victim's head, filling up with hydrofluic acid to dissolve their head. The victim had to press the correct buttons on the floor in order to escape.

Symbolic Representations[]

Traps[]

Jigsaw builds lethal traps for his test subjects, which often represent a flaw in the victim's life. Jigsaw calls these tests "games" and tells the victim the "rules" of the test usually by audio or video tape. The rules are tasks that the victim must perform in order to pass the test and survive; however the tasks often involve self-mutilation. Most of the traps are made by scavenged materials, rusty bolts, decaying iron or anything else he believes will help him create a new game. On occasion, Jigsaw had use psychological torture for the victim's test. However, not all traps require self-mutilation, as one trap required a victim to destroy his deceased son's possessions to get the key to save a second victim.

Many of the games involve clocks, counting down timers or other measured time constraints provided to the victims. Jigsaw elaborated his appreciation of time, outlining the importance of savoring every moment. He also stated his belief that telling someone the time they would die would awaken an alertness of every moment in existence.

Jigsaw intends through these lethal traps and tests to force the victims to prove to him that they are worthy and deserving to continue living, and also to learn to abandon what he percieves to be their vices. Jigsaw often expressed a desire for his victims to succeed, but stressed their fate was always in their own hands. The instructions for each game often echo this idea: Live or die. Make your choice.

These traps, also called "games" or "tests" come in six forms:

  • Standard Traps: Devices or scenarios applied to a victim or victims, usually with the effect of causing serious bodily harm or death if not completing a given task within a specified time period.
  • Competition Traps: Traps involving two or more victims who can each individually pass their test, but only at the expense of the other victim's failure. Only one or two victims are able to survive these.
  • Tests: Games that involve a victim being given "rules" or a specific task. The outcome of the test is affected whether or not the victim follows the "rules" and wins, or breaks the "rules" and loses. Losing usually results in the death of a character or some sort of loss such as suffering serious injuries or causing the deaths of loved ones and friends.
  • Trials: A series of tests or traps that the victim or victims must face with the intent of gauging the victims psychological progress from the beginning of the series up until the Final Test.
  • Final Tests: The last test in a series of trials. Culminates in a final decision that is designed to directly relate to and put to use what the victim has learned from each of their proceeding trials.
  • Security Traps: Traps designed to halt the progress of their victims and to prevent them from proceeding. Other security traps are used to protect Jigsaw and his apprentices from the police or other attackers.

Billy[]

Jigsaw Killer

Billy the Puppet

Billy, a puppet, is an icon of Jigsaw. Jigsaw often uses Billy for the purpose of delivering messages to his victims via a television screen but at times it has also been physically present with the victims during the tests. Jigsaw provided the voice for Billy when it delivered the messages. It was eventually revealed Billy was originally going to be created for his unborn son, Gideon.

Microcassettes[]

Another one of Jigsaw's trademarks is the use of microcassettes to deliver instructions to his victims, disguising his voice. He accomplished this by speaking into a reel-to-reel tape, then slowing down the playback. Often the victim would find a microcassette recorder left for them with a tape already loaded in, while at other times the tape would be found separately in an envelope marked with the victim's name or the tape on its own reading "Play Me". One tape was found in Jigsaw's stomach during his autopsy. Both of his apprentices, Amanda Young and Mark Hoffman, eventually began making their own microcassettes but not always altering their voices.

Pig Mask[]

Pig Mask

Pig Mask

The pig mask is a thermatic prop worn by Jigsaw and his apprentices to conceal their identities while abducting their victims.

The first known pig masks to have been latex strap-on masks used at a year of the Pig-Chinese New Year festival. Jigsaw had took them and donned one, while using the other one to hold his chloroform-soaked rag. The second mask was then used to knock out his first victim, Cecil Adams, by placing the mask over his head with the chloroform rag still inside.

Along with Billy and Jigsaw himself, the mask has become one of the most iconic symbols of the movies.

Jigsaw Puzzle Pieces[]

Cut outs were made, in the shape of jigsaw puzzle pieces, from the flesh of Jigsaw's failed and dead victims. Jigsaw received the nickname "Jigsaw" from the police and the press. These pieces were suppose to represent the piece the victim was missing to pass their test.

Apprentices[]

Jigsaw developed a tendecy to recruit apprentices to carry out his work. His apprentices were:

  • Amanda Young: A drug addict who survived the Reverse Beartrap and so was recruited into becoming his second apprentice. Amanda was to become Jigsaw's successor but she created inescapable traps for her victims and she was shot in the neck and killed by Jeff Denlon.
  • Mark Hoffman: A corrupt police officer who rigged the Pendulum Trap for a victim to be killed and was blackmailed into helping Jigsaw and become his secret first apprentice. After the deaths of Amanda and Jigsaw, he ultimately became the successor by capturing victims and placing them in traps and tests. He was locked in the Bathroom and left to die by Lawrence.
  • Lawrence Gordon: A cheating doctor who survived the Bathroom and was eventually recruited into becoming the third apprentice. He carried out medical procedures on victims as well as helping setting out Jigsaw traps with Jigsaw and was instructed to look after Jill after his death.
  • Pighead: An unnamed apprentice who captured victims in the asylum for Jigsaw involving Tapp's tests. Tapp later trapped and electrocuted him to death.
  • Pighead II: An unnamed apprentice who murdered some victims without Jigsaw noticing.

Though Jigsaw had also other people assisting him. Obi Tate assisted Jigsaw in kidnapping the victims for the Nerve Gas House. Ryan and Brad worked for Gordon and acted as his muscle while capturing Hoffman to lock him inside the Bathroom and leave him to die. Zep Hindle also worked for Jigsaw in taking Gordon's daughter and wife hostage and was ordered to kill them if Gordon failed, but only because Jigsaw was testing him and promised him an antidote if he does so.

Theatrical Robe[]

Jigsaw is usually seen wearing a black theatrical robe with a large hood and red lining when running traps or abducting victims. Amanda wore a similar robe to Jigsaw's in an attempt to symbolically emulate her mentor. Hoffman though, while wearing a pig mask, always wore the dark blue rain parka he'd worn since the murder of Seth Baxter, further illustrating the gap between him and Jigsaw. Also both Pighead and Pighead II they wore similar robes to Jigsaw, the only difference is that it is red.

Quotes[]

  • "I want to play a game."
  • "Live or die. Make your choice."
  • "Awake already, Jeff? I need more powerful tranquilizers next time. Don't cry, I've given your life a purpose. You are a test subject for something greater than yourself."
  • "Hello, Mark. If you're so sick, then why do I have so many photos of you up and about? Let's put your so called illness to the test. Right now, there's a slow acting poison in your veins. The antidote is inside the safe. The combination to the safe is written on the wall. Hurry up and program it in, but watch your step. And by the way, that's a flammable substance smeared on your body. So I would be careful with that candle if I were you, or all the people you've burned with your act just might have their revenge."
  • "Hello, Amanda. You don't know me but I know you. I want to play a game. Here's what happens if you lose. The device you're wearing is hooked into your upper and lower jaws. When the timer goes off, your mouth will be permanently ripped open. Think of it like a reverse Bear Trap. Here, I'll show you. There's only one key to open the device, it's in the stomach of your dead cellmate. Look around, Amanda. Know that I'm not lying. You better hurry up. Live or die. Make your choice."
  • "Hello, Mr. Hindle. Or as they called you around the Hospital: Zep. I want you to make a choice. There's a slow-acting poison coursing through your system, which I only have the antidote for. Will you murder a mother and a child to save yourself? Listen carefully, if you will; there are rules..."
  • "Hello, Michael. I want to play a game. So far in what could loosely be called your life, you made a living watching others. Society would call you an informant, a rat, a snitch. I call you unworthy of the body you possess, of the life you've been given. Now we will see if your willing to look inward, rather than outward, to give up on the one thing you rely on in order to go on living. The device around your neck is a death mask. The mask is as spring timer. If you do not locate the key in time the mask will close. Think of it like a Venus Flytrap. What you are looking right now is your own body, not more than 2 hours. Don't worry, you're sound asleep and can't feel a thing. Taking into account that you are at a great disadvantage here, I am going to give you a hint as to where I've hidden the key. So listen carefully, a hint is: it's right before your eyes. How much blood will you shed to stay alive, Michael. Live or die, make your choice."
  • "Greetings and welcome. I trust that you are all wondering where you are. I can assure you that while your location is not important, what these walls offer you is important. Salvation, if you earn it. 3 from now the door to this house will open. Unfortunately, you have 2 hours to live. Right now you are breathing a deadly nerve agent. You've been breathing it since you've arrived here. The only way to overcome it and walk out that door is to find the antidote. Several are hidden around the house. One is inside the safe in front of you. You all possess the combination to the safe. Think hard, the numbers are in the back of your mind. The clue to their order can be found over the rainbow. Once you realize what you all have in common, you will gain a better understanding of why you're here. X marks the spot for that clue, so look carefully. Let the game begin."
  • "Hello, Paul. You're a perfectly healthy, sane, mind-class male. Yet last month, you ran a straight razor across your wrists. Did you cut yourself because you truley wanted to die, or did you just want some attention? Tonight you'll show me. The irony is if you want to die, you just have to stay where you are. But if you want to live, you'll have to cut yourself again. Find the path throughout the razor wire to the door. But hurry, at 3:00 that door will lock and then this room becomes your tomb. How much blood will you shed to stay alive, Paul?"
  • "Hello, Obi. I want to play a game. For years, you've burned those around your lies, cons and deciets. Now you'll have to redeem yourself, for the games you've played with others, by playing one of mine. Inside the device in front of you are two antidotes for the poison coursing through your veins. One is my gift to you for helping me kidnap the others. The second is yours to donate. However, one of them will come with a price. Remember, Obi, once you are in Hell, only the Devil can help you out."
  • "Hello, Xavier. I want to play a game. The game I wanna play is very similar to the one you've been playing as a drug dealer. The game of offering hope to desperate, for a price. I think we can agree that your situation is desperate. So I offer you hope. The price that you pay is that you must crawl into the same pit of squalor you force your customers into. By entering the room, a timer has started. When the timer expires, the door in front of you has locked forever. Only in finding the key before the timer runs out can you unlock and retrieve the antidote inside. I will give you one hint as to where that key is: it will be liking finding a needle in a haystack. Let the game begin."
  • "Yes, I'm sick, officer. Sick from the disease eating away at my inside. Sick of people who don't appreciate their blessings. Sick of those who scoff at the suffering of others. I'm sick of it all!"
  • "Some people are so ungrateful to be alive...but not you...not anymore..."
  • "What would you have done five years ago? Would you have followed the manuel then? Would you have broken my jaw with a flashlight? I know you were considered a fearless police officer. Do you feel a lot safer now that you sit behind a desk?"
  • "Death is a surprise party. Unless, of course, you're already dead on the inside."
  • "Time's an illusion."
  • "Like you, I know what it's like to lose family. And I know what it's like not to be able to protect loved ones. It's a powerless feeling."
  • "Healthcare decisions should be made by their doctors and their patients, not by the government. Well, now I know that they're not made by doctors and their patients or the government. They're made by the fucking insurance companies."
  • "Cherish your life, your life."
  • "It's the tool. The tool that's going to save your life. I want to play a game. Your life is a lie, Cecil. Now comes to the moment of truth. As a drug addict and thief, you've preyed on the kindness of others to fuel your addiction. Today, we're bringing the ugliness inside of you out into the open. Now, in order for you to stay alive, we have to match your face with the ugliness of your soul. Just lean forward into the knives with your face. Press hard enough and you'll release the arm and the leg restraints that bind you or sit idly and bleed out on the floor. Live or die, Cecil. Make your choice."
  • "Game over."
  • "Your life."
  • "Hello, Amanda, you remember me. I want to play a game. You told our friend the Detective that I saved you, but you forget your lesson. You damaged your body with drugs and pain. Now the needle will save your life. Each of you will be injected with different poisons that will slowly break down your bodies. The device in front of you contains the antidotes of each poisons. The red vials go to the left, and the blue vials to the right. But be careful, incorrectly mixing the antidotes will cause some...discomfort. The last time we played, you freed yourself by taking a life. Now your only salvation is to put your trust in someone else. Live or die, Amanda."
  • "Hello, Jennings. While intoxicated, you hit and killed a homeless man with your car. As a forensic scientist, you know just want to clean. But you couldn't clean the guilt from your soul, could you? You ever put an innocent man in jail for your crime, all to preserve your perfect life. But you couldn't stop the guilt from eating away from you, rotting you from the inside. Unless the officer you involved your crime can halt the blade, we will see what you really have inside."
  • "Hello Doctor Gordon, you are, perhaps, my greatest asset. Without you, my work over the last few years would not have been possible. That being said, I have a request, watch over Jill. And should anything happen to her, I want you to act immediantly on my behalf, and in return for that; I will keep no more secrets from you. I have shown you a lot of places, but there is one that will perhaps be the most meaningful to you..."
  • "Hello, Tara. My apologies for exposing you and your son to this kind of treatment but I can assure you it is not without reason. The man before you made sacrifices to save the life of a loved one. However, when given the opportunity to save your husband's life, he chose not to. Now you will be given the power to save his life. Will you grant the opportunity to continue living? Or will you dispense the same death sentence he issued your husband? Live or die, the choice is yours."
  • "Hello, William. Before you are your six most valuable associates, the ones who find errors in policies. Their findings result in over two-third of all applications denied or prematurely terminated. Now you must apply your analysis to them, and you will be able to find their errors? Six ride the carousel, but only two can get off. The decision of which two survive fall upon you. But remember, the mounted gun will continue to fire all six rounds are spent. And if no decision is made on your part, all six will perish. To offer the two reprieves, you must press both buttons at once in the box before you, however in doing so, you will give a sacrifice of your own. Two can live, four will die. Your decisions symbolized by the blood on your hands."
  • "Are you there, Detective? If so, you are probably the last man standing. Now, perhaps you will succeed where the others have failed. You think you will walk away untested? I promise that my work will continue. You think it's over just because I'm dead. It's not over. The games have just begun."
  • "You see, it's a different method I'm talking about. If the subject survives my method, he or she is instantly rehabiliated. Now you want a chance? You want a chance? I'll give you a chance. I am the man you call Jigsaw. It's your duty to bring me in. I know who you are, and I know what you've done."
  • "Hello, William. You've probably been wondering when we could see each other again. Today is that day. For years, your probability formula has decided the fate of others. The healthy have benifited while the potentionally sick have been unjustly rejected. However, this formula does not take into account the Human will to live. When faced with death, who should live versus who will live are entirely seperate things. Today, your policy will be put to the test. These are four straps around your limbs and you have four tests you must complete. For if you don't, the straps on your legs and arms will detonate. Look closely. You have 60 minutes to complete your tests and avoid the fate. Starting now. You are not alone in the game. Just as you have taken loved ones away from their families, if you don't reach the end before the timer hits 0, you'll never see your family again. Here is your first test. Your health and hereditary background puts you in the highest category of success. However, the same cannot be said for your adversary. While only 50 years of age, this man has continued to smoke, even though he has a history of high blood pressure and heart disease. This demonstrates very little appreciation for the blessings of his own life. Your game will focus on the simple element of air. Once the game begins, every time you take a breath, the clamps around your chest will close in and crush your body. The only escape is in the other's failure. So I ask you, when faced with death, who will survive? Live or die, William. Make your choice."
  • "And welcome to your first test, Jeff. For the past three years, you've cursed the name of all those you thought were responsible for the death of your son. You fantasized that those accountable will pay. Well, you will find a woman in front of you chained in place. This will prevent her from running, much like the day she did when your son was hit. Her name is Danica Scott. She was the only witness present at the scene of your son's ultimately demise. If not for her own self absorption and cowardice, she could have brought your son's killer to justice. Now it is you, who has the chance to bring her to justice. You alone can grant her the gift of life, before she freezes to death. Behind the pipes on the back wall, you will find a key that will free her and bring you one step closer to the man responsible of the loss of your child. Will you claim the key to save only yourself, or can you find it within you to save another? Make your choice."
  • "Jeff, when the judge presiding over your case sentenced your boy's murderer so lightly, your soul never recovered. Now, you have the power to sentence his soul straight to hell. Or, you could forgive. The key that will free him is inside your son's possessions, possessions you have clung too far too long. Now if you flip the switch on the incinerator underneath you, a fire will cleanse you of this obsession and destroy them all, leaving only the key remaining. It is also the key that will bring you closer accountable for taking your child. He doesn't have much time, Jeff. Let the game begin."
  • "You disappoint me, detective. You spread my message, but perverted for your own personal glory. You wish to become my could be, yet you did not learn your lesson. You think knew even pain, but how can you, when you express your pain with such violence towards others? Your actions have more consequences than you realize. You are a broken man, detective, and scattered into pieces. Did you think your test was going to be that easy? This is the end detective. There is no escape. Oh yes, justice will be served."
  • "Rise and shine, Adam. You're probably wondering where you are. I'll tell you where you might be. You might be in the room that you die in. Up until now you've simply sat in the shadows, watching others live out their lives. But what do voyeurs see when they look in the mirror? Now, I see you as a strange mix of someone angry, yet apathetic, but mostly just pathetic. So are you going to watch yourself die today, Adam, or doing something about it?"
  • "Doctor Gordon, this is your wake up call. Everyday of your working life you have given people the news that they're going to die soon. Now you will be the cause of death. Your aim in this game is to kill Adam. You have until 6 on the clock to do it. There's a man in the room with you. When there's that much poison in your blood, the only thing left to do is shoot yourself. There are ways to win this, hidden all around you. Just remember: X marks the spot for the treasure. If you do not kill Adam by 6, then Allison and Diana will die, Doctor Gordon, and I'll leave you in this room to rot. Let the game begin. Follow your heart."
  • "Amanda, it's okay. This was your test. Your game. I was testing you. I took you in. I selected you for the honor of carrying on my life's work. But you didn't. You didn't test anyone's will to live. Instead you took away their only chance. Your games were unwinnable, your subjects merely victims. In my desperation, I decided to give you one last chance. So I put everything in place. You didn't know Jeff and Lynn were husband and wife. I had to keep that from you for the purpose of my game. I had to leave out the ruined marriage, the cheating wife, the vengeful husband, the neglected daughter and I let you make your own choices. I wanted you to succeed, but you couldn't. God. Game over."
  • "Now I will give you something to live for. I told you that you couldn't kill me, Jeff, but I didn't tell you why. And the answer is simple: I am the person responsible for the loss of your child. I am the only person who knows where your daughter is. She only has a limited supply of air, and if you want to get her back, and if you want to get her back, you'll have to play a game."
  • "You haven't learned anything tonight, have you? Your rage and your vengeance will only hurt the ones you love. Killing me will only add to your misery, it will not bring back your son. Think of your daughter Jeff. She needs you now you more then ever. You can't kill me, Jeff. Your wife's dying, Jeff. Her times running out. Jeff, do not miscaculate. Your fate is in my hands. Your wife's fate is in my hands. Though you may not see any threat, there are threats all around you. Jeff, if you try to move your wife, she will die. I can have an ambulance here in four minutes. Would you like to take wife out of here tonight? Would you like to take her to safety? Stand and face me Jeff. Right now. Would you like to get your life back? Would you, Jeff? I can make that happen. Which is it, Jeff? Come on, yes or no? One final test. The rules are simple. Over on that table, there's a host of vicious implements, which you can use to exact your pound of flesh, to take your vengeance, to indulge your obsession. Or you can choose to put your vengeance aside, and you can forgive. You can forgive me for the pain that I've caused you and your wife tonight. Which is it gonna be, Jeff? It's up to you. Live or die, Jeff, make your choice."
  • "Those who don't appreciate life do not deserve life."
  • "The cancer isn't what started me and my work. It was the moment I decided to end my life that started me and my work and brought meaning to it. I had literally driven myself to suicide. And I had failed. My body had not been strong enough to repel cancer cells. Yet I had lived through a blunged off a cliff. But to my amazement, I was alive. And I was determined to spend the rest of my days testing the fabric of Human nature. Do you understand, Eric?"
  • "Now you make a choice. In 20 seconds the life of this man will be ended. One key will unlock it. It's in the box. Time's running out. What's more important to you, officer? Arresting me or the life of another human being?"
  • "Hello, Detective Tapp. I want to play a game. Your obsession with catching me has robbed you of your life and the lives of others. You abuse every resource available to you in your quest to find the truth. You have lost your family, your badge, even the life of your partner, Detective Sing. You have lost your health, whittled away by the bullet wound in your chest. But you have not given up, have you? Now we will see if you can overcome your obsession. No doubt you remember the device attached to your jaw. It is evidence left over from your investigation. Here's what happens if you lose. Free yourself from the device and pursue me, or sit there and let it tear you apart. The choice is yours."
  • "This is the end, Detective, the end of all you know. You have saved everyone that you could save. Their lives were yours to do with as you wished. You're here, but have you overcome your obsession? You can save everyone who is left in this asylum, you can grant them their freedom. You can free yourself from your obsession if you only let go of the truth. Or you can continue to pursue the truth, giving into your obsession and throwing all your lives away."
  • "You know why you're here, don't you? They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But I find it somewhat...distasteful. To be given credit for work thats not mine. Especially inferior work. Like you, I know what it's like to lose family. And I know what it's like to not be able to protect loved ones. It's a powerless feeling. I wouldn't do that. Hair trigger. What do you see? Vengeance can change a person. Make you into something you never thought you were capable of being. But, unlike you, I've never killed anyone. I gave people a chance."
  • "No, I know you. I followed you as you pursued me. I know you. I know about your sister. I know how you cared for her. I know she was your only family. You sit in bars until closing. You drink so you can sleep. You stagger to your car and then you start it all over again the next day. And I discover what you do for recreation. You can dispense justice and give people a chance to value their lives in the same moment. And by the way: the blade on your pendulum was inferior. If you want a true edge, you have to use tempered steel. Tempering's better for the long haul. You in this for the long haul, Detective."
  • "The cigarettes are harmless I promise you. Smoking is only poisonous when it ends in blood shed. Think about this, you don't need a gun to kill Adam."
  • "Everybody deserves a chance!"
  • "Killing is distasteful! To me. There is a better, more effeciant, way. What do you see? Look! What do you see?"
  • "No, no, no, no, no. This is redemption. I'm just giving you an option. That's all. Now, you can arrest me, but in doing so, your life ends as you know it. Or you can explore the method of rehabilitation that'll permit you to sleep at night."
  • "But you're not a true killer. That's your dilemma. The information I have on you is exactly where I need it to be. And it will be released in the event of my disappearance."
  • "Your willing to take that risk? The risk of ruining your own life in order to protect a corrupt legal system that puts murderers back on the streets? How would your sister feel? We're at a crossroads, Detective. Make your choice."
  • "Hello, Melissa. It's time to wake up and see what your life has become. You understood the risks of marrying an officer of the law. When he was killed, you let your vengeance for Detective Tapp consume you. Your life crumbled, and you neglected your son. I now offer you a gift, a chance to break through the numbness and taste the life you buried with your husband. Will you forgive Detective Tapp, or is your hatred too great to be satiated? You are in what might be called an Iron Maiden. Move the metal cubes to the symbols and avoid the strikes. After six strikes, the device will snap shut and this place will be your tomb."
  • "Hello, Oswald. Your newspaper has been the primary source of information about my message; why I do what I do. But your motivations are selfish. You spread my message, but pervert it for your own glory. You twisted your words to implicate Detective Tapp, to make the public suspected him to be me. The device you are strapped to will twist until your body is broken. To stop the device, you must complete the electrical circuit panel. If you do not complete this circuit in time, words will not be able to describe your agony."
  • "Hello, Obi. You have isolated yourself from society, creating a life so empty that you have come to me for your test, for a reason to live. You wish to become like me. But the only way to give others the chance to live is to understand why it is so precious. The room you are in is attached to a large furnace. Detective Tapp is your only hope of redemption. If he fails, the temperature will increase and the liquid within your body will boil you alive. Time is short."
  • "Hello, Jeff. Day after day you live alone isolating yourself to avoid the stress of reality. You have tried to take your own life on multiple occasions because you cannot endure the mental pain of everyday life. Now you have to endure real pain. The game is simple. Detective Tapp must match all the corresponding symbols and you will be released. Match the wrong symbols, and a metal spike will pierce your body. Match too many wrong symbols, and your suffering will end."
  • "Hello, Campbell. I want to play a game. You flushed your own life down the toilet with your addiction to drugs. The sins of your father pass on to the son, who is also a drug addict. You no longer if his alive or dead. I can show you the truth. But you must shed some blood."
  • "Hello, Henry. When you were promoted to chief of police, you vowed to rid the streets of drug abuse. But like any politician, you have become part of the problem. Instead of the solution. You have defied the oath you made to protect the public. Usually when an officer of the law falls as low as you, they take their own life-they eat the gun. Allow me to help you with that. Each panel has a series of lights that must be switched off. But be careful, each click brings the gun closer to firing. Switch off all the lights on each panel; or it's lights out. Detective Tapp shot himself because he couldn't see the light. This is your chance to see the light-by turning them off. Live or die, Henry."
  • "Hello, Sarah. I want to play a game. You pollute your body with drugs and sell your morals on the street corner for whatever you can get. Detective Tapp gave you a second chance, an escape from your addiction. But after his death, you slipped back into your old ways, didn't you? You ate drowning i your own self-pity. Drain the water from the box by aligning the release pipes. You'd better hurry, I don't think she can hold her breath forever."
  • "Hello, Carla. You are a doctor at a free clinic, tending to people in need. This will be admirable, except for the fact that you steal pharmaceuticals and you sell them on the street. Your legs attached to an elevator, and your arms to the ceiling. Balance the numbers using as due numbers as possible. If you fail, the elevator will fall, tearing you in half. You feed off the addictions is the desperate and the dispute, perpetuating a cycle of addiction that is difficult to break. Well, let's see what your breaking point is."
  • "Hello, Michael. You've seen the corruption that pollutes the world. The gripping power of addiction. Not just to drugs, but to money and power. That addiction fuels evil, real evil, into everyone around it. Your test was to bring justice to those claiming to uphold the law. And you passed. You've proven that you can see beyond the lies that people can wrap themselves in, past the meat and sinew, to the truth. What you do with the truth is your choice. We are quite similar, Michael. We both demand justice in an unjust world. So I am giving you one last choice. You can collect those files that your father collected and publish the truth in a newspaper used to wrap fish the very next day. Or you can help people see the truth within themselves, to be rehabiliated as you were. Now is the time to choose, Michael."
  • "Hello, Campbell. Your son is unharmed. He came to me seeking answers, and he found them, in the love of his father. Your willingness to sacrifice everything for a son you never knew was your test, and you passed. Now all you have to do is turn around and walk away. Go see your son."
  • "Hello, Jeff. Over the past few years you have become a shell of your former self; consumed with hatred and vengeance. Vengeance against the drunk driver who killed your only son. Vengeance against the killer, who to your surprise and dismay, was set free after a hasty trial. Today, however, it  is you who will be put on trial. To escape from where are you, you will have to face a series of tests. You will have to suffer to move forward through each of them. But with each one, you will also have a chance; a chance to forgive. When you complete the tests, I promise you will finally come face to face with the man responsible for the loss of your child. This will be your ultimate test. Can you forgive him? You better hurry though. In 2 hours the doors will lock, and this place will become your tomb. This is what you've been waiting for, Jeff. Let the game begin."
  • "Hello, Melissa. If you are hearing this, you survived your test. You have forgiven Tapp, the man responsible for your husband's death, the man you obsessed over as your life fell into pieces. Now you must rebuild your family. Your son is now in my care. If you want him to live, you'll have to play a game. Follow the instructions provided for you. All you have to do to see your son again is keep Detective Tapp on track. To make sure you followed the rules, I have temporarily removed your ability to speak. When the clock strikes 6, you will be free of this place. But watch your step, or you will meet the same fate as your late husband. Live or die, Melissa."
  • "Your obsession destroyed your life on the outside, hurting everyone around you. You could not conquer your obsession, so now the people you have in here must suffer. Why didn't you choose your freedom?"
  • "If you are watching this, Jill, I'm long gone from this world. You are my heart. You always have been. You always will be. I'm not going to try to explain my actions this late. Suffice it to say that I find it difficult to forgive myself for what happened at the clinic. I permitted, indeed, encouraged your decisions regarding the people there. I saw danger and I should have acted sooner. I'm leaving you a box, today and it's contents are of grave importance. Even though you and I don't always see everything eye to eye, I deeply believe in you and I believe that you will know what to do with these materials."
  • "Hello, Joseph. You are the lead Vice Detective in charge of investigating crimes involving prostitution and narotics. But you don't put drug dealers in jail. Instead you squeeze them for every penny, forcing them to work for you. You pollute the city you swore to protect. At each of your limbs are mechanical devices, that, when triggered, will close one by one. The last vice will crush your skull. As an officer of the law, you have betrayed your badge. You have controlled people by taking advantage of their vices. Now those vices will control you. Let the game begin."
  • "Above you is another of my subjects. He is about the same age as your son, and you've never met him. But he has a long life ahead of him. The glass elevator at the end of the hall will only fit one. Now you must make a choice, save yourself and watch someone die, or sacrifice your life for his. Let the game begin."
  • "Hello, Michael. You aided dirty cops and their drug cartel, telling yourself it was for money. The real reason of course, was for revenge, revenge for a life of abandonment. You got more than you bargained for, driving your father to suicide, and yet you've destroyed more lives than just his. Now your life rests in the sacrifice of a stranger. Below you is a man you've never met. For you to live he must sacrifice what is left of his life. Can he look past his own greed and selfishness to save just one person? Let's find out. Live or die, Michael."
  • "Hello, Solomon. You knowingly work for criminal organizations, concealing their profits by cooking the books. You would say that you are just doing your job. I say you give criminals their ability to pollute the streets with drugs. You are attached to a cart set on a track. To free yourself, all you have to do is get to the other side of the room. As you can see, getting there will require some...planning. You're so good at cooking the books, Solomon. Let's see how well you burn."
  • "Where is he? That's a problem you're gonna have to solve before it's too late. He has about 2 hours before the gas creeping into his nervous system begins to break down his body tissue and he begins to bleed from every orufus he has. Oh yes, there will be blood."=
  • "Hello, rise and shine. Michael, Solomon; each of you have an opportunity to escape this room. The first one to move their cage to the door will be freed. However, there is no prize of second place. Oh, and watch your step. The floor is covered in broken glass. You like stories, don't you? Well here's the first one: the tortoise and the hare. Let the game begin."
  • "You've failed, Michael. But I'm giving you a second chance. You are a reporter, the public trusts the news you give them as the truth. But the truth is you write stories for your own benefit. Sons often suffer the sins of their fathers. But your father suffered your corruption. To escape this place, you will have to free those involved in your father's death. To truly succeed, you will need to not simply do what you are told. You will have to investigate your surroundings, like the reporter you claim to be. Save their lives and find the story of your father's death. Discovering the truth will set you free."
  • "Hello, Chuck. You are a drug dealer. When you were caught, you shifted the blame onto your best customer, Robert, in an attempt to receive a lighter sentence. You put a man in prison for your actions. But there is nobody to ease your burdon now. You and Robert are forever bound by your actions, just as you are bound to this wall. But be gentle; those are razor blades embedded in your arms. Live or die, Chuck."
  • "Hello, Griff. You were a promising college student until you became obsessed with a female professor who wanted to do nothing with you. But you persisted. Rape is a serious crime Griff, it labels you as a sex offender, a ticking time bomb that nobody wants to be around. Kind of life the bomb you are attached to right now. The son of the officer that arrested you is your chance of survival. You blamed Detective Tapp from keeping you from your true love. Let us see if you can free yourself from your obsession long enough to survive."
  • "Hello, Patrick. When you were a child, your father used to cut you with knives as a sadistic gesture of intimacy. Rather then break the cycle of violence, you've escalated to carving up strangers who do no more then greet you. Detective Tapp said during your trial you were incurable. But I have a cure. The device attached to your head will carve deeper and deeper into your skull everytime you make a sudden movement."
  • "Hello, Zeke. You like to molest little girls robbing them of their precious childhood and steering them into lives of prostitution and drug use. You were caught red-handed, but went to prison for only a fraction of your real crimes. Around your wrists are razor. Soon, someone will come in and tell you a series of numbers. Twist the device in the box to match the numbers you are given. This time, your hands will be red with blood."
  • "Hello, Anton. You were a mercenary for hire, specializing in terror. Your particular method of choice is throwing corrosive acid on the faces of your victims. This ensures that, even if they live, they have no chance to surgically repair their faces, leaving them forever scarred. Time to see what that's like. There is an acid drip on the chain to your cage. The son of the officer that put you in prison will decide whether you escape unharmed or you burn like your victims. You had better hope he has a steady hand, Anton."
  • "Hello, Donovan. You have always been a violent man, especially to the women you claim to love. You tell them that the pain you cause them is their own fault, that you love them too much to not beat them mercilessly. Let's see if you can take the pain you dish out. The device attached to your body has spikes that point inward and outward. The pain you cause with these spikes will be reflected back onto you. Understand Donovan, sometimes the use of force can by your downfall."
